Ivan Lupi
~ A Private Requiem
We are delighted to welcome back internationally-renowned performance artist Ivan Lupi for the world-premiere performance of A Private Requiem. This 5-day endurance performance will take place each day from Thursday 16th May to Monday 20th May at The Vivian and visitors are welcome to experience each stage as it evolves, and also take part at specific times.
Please do not speak to Ivan during the performance, as he will be unable to reply.
From Ivan:
“Before the age of 7 I was sexually abused by a mentally ill person while sitting in a cinema on my own watching the animation movie ‘Snow White’. ‘A private requiem’ is a series of actions coming from that experience. The piece offers an exploration of trauma-related performative behaviours and distorted recollections that might interfere with memory or its concealing. In entering the room you are invited to participate according to the guidelines below. Please keep silent at all times.” Ivan Lupi.
Day 1: Thursday 16th May
I cover the dress with a coat of tar, using a small brush. If you feel inclined, take a brush and join me in the action for as long as you like. Please keep silent.
Day 2: Friday 17th May
I walk around the dress in circles without taking my eyes off it. If you feel inclined, join me in the action for as long as you like. Please keep silent.
Day 3: Saturday 18th May
I wear the dress and I paint it with the original colours from the movie, using a small brush. If you feel inclined, join me in the action for as long as you like. When you finish please place the brush back in the container. Please keep silent.
Day 4: Sunday 19th May
I sleep on the ground wearing the dress. If you feel inlined, join me in the action for as long as you like. Please keep silent.
Day 5: Monday 20th of May
I strip the colours off from the dress. If you feel inclined, join me in the action for as long as you like. Please keep silent.
