Wayne Youle is one of New Zealand’s most exciting artists. Unpredictable. Mischievous. Yet profoundly serious in his intent to confront us with the big questions of what art can be on a fundamental level – by creating it, rather than just theorising about it. His show in the South Gallery, ‘Here I give thanks’ is on the one level a colourful homage to his favourite artists, but also a deeply personal exploration of his family and is role as a father.
